The most haunted island in the world was recently put up for public auction. The 17-acre Italian island known as Poveglia sold for £400,000 The Daily Traveler reported last month.
Poveglia is a small island located in Italy, nestled between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon. The area is the one of the most popular tourist sites in the world but the island seldom gets any visitors.
The island was used as a quarantine location in the late 18th century for people that were dying of the black plague. In recent years the buildings on the island were used for a mental hospital. The hospital was open from 1922 to 1968. Since the closing of the hospital, Poveglia has been closed to visitors and only open to government officials. It has been uninhabited and abandoned for over 45 years.
The Italian government recently put the island up for sale in an auction in hopes to reduce the country's public debt. But the island will bring its new buyer a lot of baggage. Poveglia has been called the most haunted place in the world and it's known to have over 10,000 angry spirits.
Poveglia has been featured on the Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures" and ABC Family's "Scariest Places on Earth" television shows. The paranormal phenomena of the island was documented in the second episode of season three of "Ghost Adventures" which is hosted by Zak Bagans. Bagans allegedly had a demonic possession while on Poveglia Island. He later got a tattoo that symbolized his experience on the island.
"An overwhelming feeling of extreme anger and hatred came over me. I can't explain it but it's hard to ignore the chain of events that led up to this moment. First, Nick asking the spirits to use our energy, then Aaron feeling suddenly drained. I do recall that everything I saw was like a red filter over my eyes then I lost all memory of what happened at that point," Bagans said remembering his experience at Poveglia Island.
